the corner of Florida and Sherwood Forest Boulevard 225272430 st mary’s Books and Gifts [Music] a good Wednesday to you i’m Father Chris Decker with today’s gospel jesus said to his disciples « Take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them otherwise you will have no recompense from your heavenly father when you give alms do not blow a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win the praise of others amen i say to you they have received their reward but when you give alms do not let your left hand know what your right is doing so that your almsgiving may be secret and your father who sees in secret will repay you when you pray do not be like the hypocrites who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners so that others may see them amen i say to you they have received their reward but when you pray go to your inner room close the door and pray to your father in secret and your father who sees in secret will repay you when you fast do not look gloomy like the hypocrites they neglect their appearance so that they may appear to others to be fasting amen i say to you they have received their reward but when you fast anoint your head and wash your face so that you may not appear to others to be fasting except to your father who is hidden and your father who sees what is hidden will repay you thank you Father Chris Decker well you know I was at a men’s conference a few years ago and uh when I heard this saying I’d heard the saying before but this time it really made sense dave you were there you might remember this the speaker was quoting actually a well-known modern Methodist pastor who said quote « We are merely one beggar telling another beggar where to find bread. » That I like that which of course Yeah yeah we are merely one beggar telling another beggar where to find bread so which of course is a very Catholic history of being lived out by great saints such as Francis of Aisi St elizabeth of Hungary so if we think about that image you know of ourselves as a beggar it might conjure up this idea you know that we’re walking around in rags we’re taking money rather than working for it being a real weight on society but this is not what our Lord means at all in today’s gospel for our you know Jesus our lord was and still is in many ways the ultimate beggar at the same time as being the king of kings so what do I mean by that well let’s take a look at these three acts of mercy that uh he’s talking about and he’s presenting today good deeds almsgiving and prayer first deeds why did Jesus do the deeds he did it certainly wasn’t to win praise because a he knew every act of kindness every miracle every teaching was only leading to his death right and then with almsgiving think about how Jesus in numerous parables told about the whole point of our gifts and talents is to serve as he served to do things for the least of those among us we do it for him as he said and then with respect to prayer you know we read over and over again how Jesus was always going up by himself to pray in private pray with his father and he goes up there he’s the ultimate beggar because he’s pleading for us he’s pleading for our souls to turn to him to leave him in family wealth power for the sake of the kingdom so here’s this Jesus the son of God creator of the universe taking the posture of a slave of a beggar and he tells us that when we that we need to follow his example and it doesn’t matter what other people think or not think you know interiorly we’re like the unnamed prodigal son with that fine coat on us and the ring on our finger and we’re being celebrated at the feast which of course is the mass where the true bread of Christ the beggar comes to us in the sacrament so I started thinking about this you know this gospel i always want to apply it to ourselves in where we are and we have to be honest and ask ourselves when we do works of mercy give to causes even praying in our communities what’s our posture think about our posture who’s on the throne is it our self-image or is it Christ are we more concerned with our image before others or the image that only God sees and he loves and so I have to admit to myself sometimes I’m patting myself on the back for the things for doing something good and I’m you know I I want to be complimented i want to be thanked i want to be thought of you know as a good person that type of thing and you know that’s a natural human thing right but the Lord’s trying to show us that it it’s far better to give those things or compliments those pats than to receive it what’s needed from each of us has nothing to do with how it makes us feel except for one and only thing our love of God and our desire to please him you know that’s our motive it should be our motive all other motives should be checked at the confessional door but you think about it you know I I start think about the the friends and people I know in the pews uh you know those those are the people many of the people there nobody notices and they don’t want to be noticed they give themselves selflessly they remain anonymous for example I think about the elderly who pray constantly for souls in their homes some of the shutins I know some of these these ladies that do that men that do that how about businessmen and women who quietly contribute to causes at some that would make us blush I tell you you know I’ve seen it yeah I’ve seen it here uh and and they they don’t want to be known Uh and they they they they want it anonymous and I’m taking a back i think it’s it’s beautiful i’m sorry Johnny i didn’t mean to interrupt you yeah no you’re right you know and if and David you know this that you know they these people are the most peaceful joyful and grateful people you could know they don’t need any anything else they they please their father and they know it they’re the true beggars that lead me and others to the bread right you know so someone said that holiness is a very mysterious thing the greater it is the less it’s noticed you know so um you know their heart their desires attached to the God who seems hidden but who shines out from souls like that that’s the kind of lamp so finally I I saw this other saying there’s an eastern saying that goes like this quote those that sleep on the floor never fall from their beds unquote well good point i like that that is good yes the the posture of a beggar this thing went on to say is one who knows they can’t please everybody they just want to please the father the only one whose real opinion actually really matters right he’s the only one so let him judge our fruit rather than worrying about how good our tree looks let him show us what is good rather than talking about how good we are and may our reward be his love alone which satisfies rather than the world’s attention which as we know quickly fades right mhm so lot there with our Lord today teaching us and he’s going to go on uh after here to teach us the our father how to pray that prayer so this viewers in the beautiful section of our gospel in Matthew today right guys yeah and it itarkens me back to your opening prayer that what we do we do for the glory of God if we contemplate just doing today a lot for the glory of God it leaves us out of the picture a lot doesn’t it right i mean because we’re submitting ourselves for God’s glory and sometimes we take the back seat it’s like our lady always pointing to our Lord that’s what we need to do right our compass right well stay with us in fact on that topic Father Thomas Marorrow is going to talk about his book Achieving Chastity in an Unchased World quarter past the hour now on Wake Up [Music] what is flourishing and how answer to that is yes you absolutely should how many times have you put a shrub in a location and a few months after the plants died off or how many times have you planted a tree too close to your house only to realize a few years later that the branches are going into the ease of your house when you hire a landscape architect you’re hiring a professional who’s gone through years of schooling and years of professional experience who knows where you should put all your shrubs to get enough shade enough sunlight to where they won’t be prone to issues with the wind to where when you plant a tree it’s far enough away from your house to where the canopy won’t be on top of your roof and then every few years you have to trim up the branches just because you planted that tree too close and these are some of the reasons why you should hire a landscape architect i’m Zorn with Green Seasons if you have any questions please give us a call at 8883531971 i’m Johnny Abear here to tell you and I’m Jeff Blackwell along with Johnny Abear and David Dawson it is 19 past the hour this Wednesday morning Dave yes indeed right now we’re joined by Father Thomas Morrow he’s a Catholic author of the book Achieving Chastity in an Unchased World good morning Father Tom good morning good morning happy to have you with us this morning and boy I bet this is a thick book nowadays uh you know we have we have so much surrounding us and everything uh all sports commercials everything that’s out there everything is is is pretty sexualized and we’re talking about living a chasteed life amongst all of this that’s quite the challenge but uh tell us about the book okay well uh basically we the feature the main feature of the book is the fact that we have a method for people to achieve chastity uh in addition to seeking grace uh we have a method that was uh comes from uh Aristotle Thomas Aquinas and Pope John Paul II and um it it uh solves the problem of what happens so often is people they abstain for uh two three four five six weeks and then they and then they binge and um th this little uh technique uh helps you to uh convert the heart the problem is that mind says I don’t want to do this the heart says I got to have it yes and so again from Aristotle Thomas Aquinus John Paul 2 We have a way of uh converting the heart and if you convert the heart and the heart and mind go in the same direction then there’s no struggle my goodness and u that’s chastity so um you want me to tell you the uh things on the list that my goodness you know yeah I’m seeing I’m seeing quite the list you have here it it says strategies to train your mind in overcoming impure thoughts and desires that part right there again if you’re talking a total conversion that has got to be uh quite the release and relief for a lot of folks to suddenly I mean they’re just going to be out of slavery aren’t they yeah a lot of uh people have have used this and have done very well in fact we have a little leaflet that we put out that uh tells the story of two guys that uh found uh Chaffy uh it didn’t take it it took them it took more than overnight but it but they but they worked hard at it and now this one guy who used to fall to pornography and masturbation every day for 20 years now he’s almost completely clean wow so uh it does work and probably a much happier person too i can imagine absolutely and this guy now has got you know he was starting to go into daily mass a little bit but now he’s daily communicant and a very happy guy you’re right you know I’m I’m looking at this next uh uh step you have here it says ways to avoid love addiction and broken relationship i What is love addiction a love addiction is where you you uh are are in love with somebody and it’s like it possesses you you don’t have any freedom uh you’re controlled by it and u we don’t want to be controlled by anything but God so uh people have to uh talk to themselves and in fact this is how I got over a girlfriend in college you talk to yourself and said no I don’t need this um this this is bad this is bad for me and this I’m too uh too hooked on this person and so we tell ourselves that over and over again and finally the the heart gives up and says « Yeah that’s right that was not health healthy. » Wow that was an addiction okay so so the love addiction then is the addiction uh or the desire to be loved or the addiction i don’t think we’d be a uh it would be wrong to have the addiction to desire to love someone or how does that work well the the addiction is when you desire somebody uh as Plato says the the um the good the beautiful and the true in another person right now that’s more noble okay than just sexually sexual gratification but it still can be it still can be selfish uh and that’s the problem that the the the actresses says « Well this is my fifth wedding and this one is really going to stick right? » And uh they’re making a god out of aeros aos is that desire for the good the beautiful and the true so uh it it doesn’t work that way um we we’ve got to love the person for their sake not for our sake that’s the issue and then and then you have six chastity principles to recall to sublimate uh resentment and to find peace talk about that yeah so these are the the points that I I I give cards out in confession to have this list on them sex is holy not a plate thing should never be trivialized created in the image and likeness of God i can live by reason not just by urges persons are to be loved not used as objects of enjoyment uh I must not treat persons as objects even in the mind lest I become a user of persons in practice unchased activity destroys my most precious friendship that with God the source of all happiness and unchased activity brings pleasure but not happiness right right i’m going to skip down to another step here that this this fascinated me because it was uh something else that I had learned uh and and it says how to cultivate a healthy healthy fun activities to stimulate your mind what has happened with our electronic devices is there’s so much there to stimulate the mind that that in its own way some people are addicted to to to games even you know on their phone they can’t put the phone down and that in itself is another addiction and so so you say there’s healthy alternatives to that talk about that okay well uh some people tell me they’re addicted to their football team their favorite football Absolutely and uh one guy one guy told me you should stop watching this was back years when the Redskins were Redskins he said « You should stop watching the Redskins. » Then I said « No because I I’m not hooked on it if I if somebody wants to play tennis I don’t see the Redskins game if I want to go to somebody a religious event I don’t see the Red. » So I don’t I don’t care that much but this guy was addicted to the Pit Pittsburgh Steelers okay and he he he realized that he was addicted so he stopped alto together you don’t have to stop altogether you have to just have everything moderated and realize everything in its own place yes and u do everything in moderation and not be hooked on anything except God and his will that in itself uh speaks volumes and so you you have these these incredible steps this sounds like an incredible book because you’re talking about changing the heart from addiction to all that’s around us that we’re constantly being fed with uh well I I guess fed with it’s all around us for us to consume at such ease uh that this this to to be able to see it all around us yet to turn away from it is quite the feat for a lot of folks and so what you’re saying in this book uh with with these incredible contributions as far as knowledge and goes uh this this this sounds like a very very powerful book absolutely and uh as you were saying by the way uh they have those two stories of the guys that made it out of lust those are in the back of the book those are there uh not just in the leaflet so they’re in the book but people have done it and and they’ve done well but it’s it takes time uh one guy the guy that would used to fall every day for 20 years oh it took him more than a year but he kept improving and the priest in the confession told him he was improving so that that’s how he got courage to pursue this and he came out ahead so so this book that you’ve written here uh is is to help somebody to at least begin the journey uh to improve it’s not something like you’re going to read it and go « Aha I will do this. » It’s not an overnight thing but at least it helps you begin the journey that’s it yeah and you got to do the work that’s what I tell people some people come in and I say « Do you still have the card? » « Yeah. » « Do you know where it is? » « Yeah. » « Are you using it? » « No it doesn’t work if we don’t use it. » It’s just like anything else any type of daily exercise it’s difficult to do at first but I’m sure you improve you get better and better at it it’s just the beginning uh of of of a journey but but father what you’re talking about here and this is the part that really intrigues me because we are an addictive society there’s so much out there that I see that people are slaves to including I mean I’ll fall into that with food oh my gosh you know uh and and I’ll just lose sight of everything else and think about the next meal you know what I mean so to be able to to change my heart yet there’s food all around or or to change you know some of the other things that I’m seeing for people to get over that uh that’s that’s quite the venture uh to to as you’re saying not to avoid something altogether you can’t right that’s it that’s right okay but uh and I do have something in the book I recommend for people to have not sexual fantasies but religious fantasies and what’s the religious fantasy that I have well it’s this this uh God comes to me in the shape of a beautiful woman embraces me warmly and chastely and worships my ear we’re going to be married forever because we are going to be married to God forever that’s what it says in the scriptures wow so that’s an alternative i don’t believe in just taking stuff away i believe in providing something else better wow the book is called Achieving Chastity in an Unchased World this sounds like a very very powerful book and uh it could sounds like it could help out a lot of people we’ve been talking to Father Thomas Mororrow father Tom real quick how can we get a hold of your book okay you can get it on our website CF Alive c Life TV in Baton Rouge and also in New Orleans channel 15 in Baton Rouge if you’re watching us online I mean if you’re watching us on TV online on Facebook YouTube and everything we got folks joining us like Karen like Janet so want to say good morning to y’all and thanks for joining us right now we are talking to Eric Sammons he’s a Catholic author of the book Moral Money a case for Bitcoin this should be so interesting good morning Eric good morning how are you doing i am just the more I review what you have to talk about the more questions I have there there there is just all of this is still relatively new to a lot of people and especially me because I’m an old coot okay but let’s get all the way back down to digital currency what is Bitcoin yeah that’s a great question that’s really where we have to start because you’re right it is still a new thing and the truth is there’s a lot of uh confusion out there and and there’s a lot of just people don’t understand what it is because of how it’s marketed frankly yeah and one of the things I wanted to do with this book was take it back to more of the basics and I will first say what Bitcoin is not it is not an investment people that’s the first thing they think of they think of it like a stock or something like that but really it’s a new form of money and I think that’s very important i think people don’t always understand what money is you just kind of use it without thinking and so what I’m trying to do in this book is explain first of all just what is money and why there are real serious problems in the in the form of money we use now i.e the dollar and why bitcoin is a superior more moral form of money so really it’s a form of money that is that resides on the internet and the properties it was given when it was first created back about 16 years ago were to mimic somewhat the properties of gold most people realize that gold for a very long time was the form of money used in many societies throughout the world and there’s a reason for that it’s because of its properties tended to make it the best form of money possible in for example the the 1400s or something like that and then we’ve gotten away from that now we have mostly paper money and and things like the dollar but Bitcoin is trying to be it’s funny because it’s a return to the past while also looking to the future so it’s a return to the past of saying okay those properties of gold were really good and made very good money but now what we want to do is it but gold can’t really be used today because most of our commerce is online through the internet and digitally so we’re going to make a type of money that’s similar to gold and a lot of its properties yet it resides on the internet so you can I could literally send money to somebody in Japan it would cost me a couple cents i could send I don’t have this but if I had a million dollars of Bitcoin I could send it to them and they’d get it within about 10 minutes and it’ be worth and it would cost me maybe 50 cents to send it so that’s why that’s essentially what Bitcoin is yeah but but what what you’re saying there is couldn’t that be done for dark deeds i mean if you’re talking about sending a million dollars somewhere I mean in 10 minutes it just seems like there’s more that could be done wrong with that than than good yeah and that’s that’s it’s funny you asked that because it’s one of the reasons I wrote the book is because I I’ve been involved in Bitcoin since 2013 so for a very long time now and that’s one of the most common things I hear from my fellow Catholics in particular is you hear about you know drug deals and things like that and there’s no question that it can be but my argument would be the better a money is the more everybody can use it in a in a more efficient manner so yes people who want to use it for ill can use it for ill but people who want to use it for good can use it even better for good and let me give an example i don’t know if you remember a few years ago when the Canadian government shut down the the truckers who were protesting and they shut down their bank accounts and they took money out of their accounts that’s a case where the the government which is supposed to be working on our side most of the time but in this case they were literally taking it from them and shutting down their bank accounts you could still send them money and they could receive it in Bitcoin in fact they had a Bitcoin address i sent a little money to them in Bitcoin knowing I don’t have to worry about that money being confiscated my goodness by the government so so yes there’s no question when you create something more efficient that means it can be more efficiently used for by everybody and the truth is the dollar is still and cash is still the number one thing that that people use for crime and so okay we’re not going to get rid of cash obviously we shouldn’t want to get rid of cash just because criminals use it but instead we should say let’s work on the criminals separately but let’s have a form of money that’s good for everybody this is this is quite interesting and then and then let’s get back to what you were saying for a lot of folks i mean because you always hear investing in Bitcoin but you’re saying it’s not an investment but the values go up and down i you can watch it online as an So explain that and I and I’m being a little bit uh provocative maybe in saying that and going against kind of the grain but I do believe that I would say Bitcoin is savings it is not it is not an investment and by that what I mean is like traditionally we’ve kind of forget the differences but savings means like you kind of think of savings maybe you put something in the bank in a savings account doesn’t make a lot of money but it’s safe there or even you put it under your mattress or something like that sure but the truth is because of inflation the value of that money let’s say you put it under your mattress it will go down it will go down radically in fact over the past you know it goes down about five or six% a year in recent years the value of it Bitcoin though maintains its value yes I know it goes up and down a lot but if you look at the history of it maintain because of its properties it maintains that value over a long period of time and so it’s really a savings uh avenue because it like I said It’s just simply like you’re saving in this form like it’d be like the person who saves gold and I you know I think that’s fine too like maybe they get some gold coins and they want to save that yes you could call that an investment but I think of that as more of of of savings that you’re just trying not to lose the the value of the money that you that you worked for if you work for money let’s say you put aside $1,000 and all of a sudden in five years it’s worth only $500 yes i feel like somebody’s taken that money from you even though you were doing the right thing by putting it away in savings interesting interesting okay so let’s get to the Catholic side of this let’s get to the moral side of this how is it moral more moral see I would say properties of money a few of the properties of money make them more or less moral one of them is the ability to counterfeit it’s it’s basically impossible to counterfeit Bitcoin that’s true uh and so that that’s one thing secondly it’s scarce and that’s very important and what I mean by that is it can’t be it can’t be created by somebody just on a whim right now our current money the dollar in America that is can be created by the government whenever they feel like it and they do do that and that’s why in fact the value that’s why we have inflation that’s why the value of our money goes down so much why a gallon of milk maybe 30 years ago is so much was so much less than it is today how much it cost it’s because they’re printing money we saw it with the the um 2008 situation with the recession then we saw it with COVID they they create all this new money well when they do that that devalues the value of our money right you can’t do that with Bitcoin and so the reason I call it moral is because I really feel like that’s a moral issue because let’s say somebody you know we talk about in the church just wage that you pay somebody that something that that they should um that that is fair to them that you know they can support their family stuff like that right well what if you pay them a just wage but then the value what you pay them goes down so much they now can’t support themselves and this happens in real life whereas Bitcoin by maintaining that value over time being scarce you can’t just print it out of nothing the government can’t just say « Oh we need to fund a new war so we’re going to print a bunch of money or we need to do whatever. » Well I think that that allows it to have a much more um it’s independent is is a good way to put it and that makes it more moral well I’ve I’ve ordered the book because just in researching you and the book it’s like I have got to know more and so look uh we’re out of time actually Eric we’ve been talking to Eric Sammons the book is called Moral Money: A Case for Bitcoin where do we get a hold of your book easiest way is just go to my website eric Sammons.com just ericammons.com you’ll see a link to to buy the until the top of the hour on this Wednesday wake up with David Dawson i’m Jeff Blackwell and here’s Johnny Abear and a reminder that the novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus starts today yes amen so let’s get that going and uh yes indeed well let’s uh let’s turn our attention now to a really powerful topic dr jordan Hadad he’s the professor of dogmatic theology at Notre Dame Seminary and also the president of the St louis the 9th Arts Society to talk about a topic that’s uh in the news good morning Dr hadad good morning it’s great to be with y’all you bet yeah so we kind of continuing this Catholic 101 segment on the Pope so here’s the general question that came to us here’s the question what is the role of the pope in our church especially with all eyes on the Catholic Church with the election of Pope Leo I 14th and I I would think some non-atholics would say well the role is the pope tells you what to do and you just do it in uh he invents man-made traditions anyway what is what is the role true role of our pope yeah that’s a great question i’m really excited and happy to be able to talk about it with y’all this morning um so to start you know it really all boils down to you know the Pope is the successor of St peter and so all that the Pope is called to do all that the Pope is called to be is is we have to think about it as grounded in St peter himself because the papacy is the continuation in real time of St peter’s calling of St peter’s gifts of St peter’s ministry in the life of the church down through the ages so that in a way St peter continues to guide and direct and minister to the church in and through his successors and here I want to just very briefly introduce three important terms here um that really underline what we’re talking about this morning and the first is Petrine primacy petrine primacy another way to think about that is the primacy of St peter and this refers to the the the person in the office of St peter as the undisputed leader of the apostles and the church in his own day and so Peter by virtue of being the singular leader of the apostles has a clear priority in leadership in authority and service and honor within the church in the college of the apostles and then this doctrine sort of sets the foundations for two other closely related teachings which are called petrine prime petrine succession and papal primacy so petrine succession refers simply to the passing on of the mission and the authority and the prerogatives of Peter to his successors the popes and then papal primacy is sort of like the result of that and papal primacy refers to the priority of leadership of the successor of St peter relative to the successors of the apostles right the college of bishops so the best way to think about this is that what St peter is relative to the rest of the apostles is what the pope is relative to the Catholic bishops of the world and so when we’re thinking about the mission or the calling of of the Roman pontiff of the pope it really just comes down to well what was it that St peter was entrusted with by Christ that informs and and really sets the foundation for what a pope is called to do in any given age so just as St peter was called by Christ to feed his sheep so too is the pope called to feed or to minister to the church just as St peter was given the keys to the kingdom of heaven to bind and to loose so too is the pope given the authority to govern the church in matters of doctrine and morals and disciplines and just as St peter was called the rock and was prayed for by Christ that his faith may not fail so too does Christ preserve the Roman pontiff and authoritatively professing the true faith and so on and so really it just comes down to you know the pope has this unique calling within the church to serve as the the great unifier of the church to serve as the great witness of faith in the church to serve as the the servant of the servants of God the one who serves the bishops so that they might serve their local churches so that we might all you know become the saints that God has has created us to be and be that bride of Christ that Christ died for so that you know we might be presented to him you know spotless and blame blameless when we you know when he comes again i love that title the servant uh to the servants of God and I hearkens back Dr i’d add to when Jesus pulls Peter aside at the end the gospel there when he says strengthen your brothers strengthen your brothers feed my lambs as you said to strengthen to feed to serve that doesn’t sound like a a top- down hierarchy to me sound like an upside down pyramid almost uh rather than way people think of that think of it maybe in as a business or an institutional i don’t know what are your thoughts yeah exactly you know um so there’s this great line from St gregory the Great who was one of the most important popes in the history of the church and and he he lived mostly in the sixth century in the 500s and he says « My honor is the honor of the whole church my honor is the steadfast strength of my brethren then do I receive true honor when it is denied to none of those to whom my to whom honor is due. » You know so he’s saying he’s saying that that his responsibility is not to is not to to sort of govern in a in a as as the nations do right jesus says in Matthew 20 « Whoever would be great among you must be your servant. » And so in the church we’re really called to a a a sort of paradigm shift of how we think about the nature of power and authority it’s not something to lord over but rather it exists for the sake of of service it exists for the sake of love it exists for the sake of of strengthening so that we might more freely and ablely respond you know to the great calling that Christ gives each and every one of us who’s our true master you know which is why we call the Roman pontiff the vicor of Christ you know he’s the ambassador he’s the one who serves on behalf of Christ so that we might all follow him more closely well you know we’re we’re running out of time but because maybe next time we want to touch on this idea of infallibility i mean some people think yeah everything the pope says from his chair is to be believed or on or even in an interview or something but uh let’s just let’s hit that topic in the future maybe what exactly is infallibility when he speaks ex Cathedral and those types of things but uh but that’s for another day so Dr jordan Hadad thank you so much for joining us this morning where can people keep up with St louis the 9inth Art Society and with Notre Dame yeah so Notre Dame we’re on break right now but we’re we’re we’re sort of preparing for the upcoming academic year uh you can find us at at nds.edu and 1448.4 a good Wednesday to you i’m Father Chris Decker with today’s gospel
1454.0 jesus said to his disciples « Take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them otherwise you
1460.96 will have no recompense from your heavenly father when you give alms do not blow a trumpet before you as the
1466.64 hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win the praise of others amen i say to you they have received
1473.039 their reward but when you give alms do not let your left hand know what your right is doing so that your almsgiving
1479.44 may be secret and your father who sees in secret will repay you when you pray
1484.72 do not be like the hypocrites who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners so that others may see
1490.24 them amen i say to you they have received their reward but when you pray
1496.0 go to your inner room close the door and pray to your father in secret and your father who sees in secret will repay you
1503.6 when you fast do not look gloomy like the hypocrites they neglect their appearance so that they may appear to
1509.279 others to be fasting amen i say to you they have received their reward but when
1515.2 you fast anoint your head and wash your face so that you may not appear to others to be fasting except to your
1521.919 father who is hidden and your father who sees what is hidden will repay you
1530.559 thank you Father Chris Decker well you know I was at a men’s conference a few years ago and uh when I
1537.84 heard this saying I’d heard the saying before but this time it really made sense dave you were there you might
1543.84 remember this the speaker was quoting actually a well-known modern Methodist pastor who said quote « We are merely one
1551.36 beggar telling another beggar where to find bread. » That I like that which of
1557.76 course Yeah yeah we are merely one beggar telling another beggar where to find bread so which of course is a very
1563.76 Catholic history of being lived out by great saints such as Francis of Aisi St
1568.799 elizabeth of Hungary so if we think about that image you know of ourselves
1573.919 as a beggar it might conjure up this idea you know that we’re walking around in rags we’re taking money rather than
1579.679 working for it being a real weight on society but this is not what our Lord
1584.72 means at all in today’s gospel for our you know Jesus our lord was and still is
1590.32 in many ways the ultimate beggar at the same time as being the king of kings so
1597.039 what do I mean by that well let’s take a look at these three acts of mercy that
1602.4 uh he’s talking about and he’s presenting today good deeds almsgiving and prayer first deeds why did Jesus do
1610.0 the deeds he did it certainly wasn’t to win praise because a he knew every act
1615.12 of kindness every miracle every teaching was only leading to his death right and
1620.159 then with almsgiving think about how Jesus in numerous parables told about the whole point of our gifts and talents
1626.0 is to serve as he served to do things for the least of those among us we do it
1632.32 for him as he said and then with respect to prayer you know we read over and over again how Jesus was always going up by
1639.039 himself to pray in private pray with his father and he goes up there he’s the
1644.159 ultimate beggar because he’s pleading for us he’s pleading for our souls to turn to him to leave him in family
1650.4 wealth power for the sake of the kingdom so here’s this Jesus the son of God creator of the universe taking the
1656.64 posture of a slave of a beggar and he tells us that when we that we need to
1661.76 follow his example and it doesn’t matter what other people think or not think you know interiorly we’re like the unnamed
1669.12 prodigal son with that fine coat on us and the ring on our finger and we’re being celebrated at the feast which of
1676.08 course is the mass where the true bread of Christ the beggar comes to us in the sacrament
1682.24 so I started thinking about this you know this gospel i always want to apply it to ourselves in where we are and we
1688.24 have to be honest and ask ourselves when we do works of mercy give to causes even
1693.44 praying in our communities what’s our posture think about our posture who’s on
1699.039 the throne is it our self-image or is it Christ are we more concerned with our
1704.159 image before others or the image that only God sees and he loves and so I have
1709.2 to admit to myself sometimes I’m patting myself on the back for the things for doing something good and I’m you know I
1716.64 I want to be complimented i want to be thanked i want to be thought of you know as a good person that type of thing and
1723.2 you know that’s a natural human thing right but the Lord’s trying to show us that it it’s far better to give those
1729.2 things or compliments those pats than to receive it what’s needed from each of us
1735.039 has nothing to do with how it makes us feel except for one and only thing our
1740.96 love of God and our desire to please him you know that’s our motive it should be
1746.08 our motive all other motives should be checked at the confessional door but you think about it you know I I start think
1752.96 about the the friends and people I know in the pews uh you know those those are the people
1760.0 many of the people there nobody notices and they don’t want to be noticed they give themselves selflessly they remain
1766.08 anonymous for example I think about the elderly who pray constantly for souls in
1771.44 their homes some of the shutins I know some of these these ladies that do that men that do that how about businessmen and women who quietly contribute to
1778.24 causes at some that would make us blush I tell you you know I’ve seen it yeah I’ve seen it here uh and and they they
1785.039 don’t want to be known Uh and they they they they want it anonymous and I’m taking a back i think
1791.919 it’s it’s beautiful i’m sorry Johnny i didn’t mean to interrupt you yeah no you’re right you know and if and David
1797.44 you know this that you know they these people are the most peaceful joyful and grateful people you could know they
1802.96 don’t need any anything else they they please their father and they know it they’re the true beggars that lead me
1808.399 and others to the bread right you know so someone said that holiness is a very mysterious thing the greater it is the
1815.6 less it’s noticed you know so um you know their heart their desires attached to the God who seems hidden but who
1822.799 shines out from souls like that that’s the kind of lamp so finally I I saw this other saying there’s an eastern saying
1828.96 that goes like this quote those that sleep on the floor never fall from their beds unquote well good point i like that
1836.72 that is good yes the the posture of a beggar this thing went on to say is one
1841.919 who knows they can’t please everybody they just want to please the father the only one whose real opinion actually
1847.6 really matters right he’s the only one so let him judge our fruit rather than
1852.96 worrying about how good our tree looks let him show us what is good rather than talking about how good we are and may
1860.159 our reward be his love alone which satisfies rather than the world’s attention which as we know quickly fades
1867.36 right mhm so lot there with our Lord today teaching us and he’s going to go on uh
1872.64 after here to teach us the our father how to pray that prayer so this viewers in the beautiful section of our gospel
1879.039 in Matthew today right guys yeah and it itarkens me back to your opening prayer
1884.32 that what we do we do for the glory of God if we contemplate just doing today a
1889.919 lot for the glory of God it leaves us out of the picture a lot doesn’t it right i mean because we’re submitting
1896.24 ourselves for God’s glory and sometimes we take the back seat
1901.919 it’s like our lady always pointing to our Lord that’s what we need to do right our compass right well stay with us in
1908.48 fact on that topic Father Thomas Marorrow is going to talk about his book Achieving Chastity in an Unchased World

2040.32 for home delivery should you hire a landscape architect
2046.399 hi I’m Zorn with Green Seasons and my answer to that is yes you absolutely
2051.599 should how many times have you put a shrub in a location and a few months after the plants died off or how many
2058.879 times have you planted a tree too close to your house only to realize a few years later that the branches are going
2064.0 into the ease of your house when you hire a landscape architect you’re hiring a professional who’s gone through years
2069.44 of schooling and years of professional experience who knows where you should put all your shrubs to get enough shade
2075.919 enough sunlight to where they won’t be prone to issues with the wind to where
2081.359 when you plant a tree it’s far enough away from your house to where the canopy won’t be on top of your roof and then
2087.52 every few years you have to trim up the branches just because you planted that tree too close and these are some of the
2093.119 reasons why you should hire a landscape architect i’m Zorn with Green Seasons if you have any questions please give us a

2136.64 hey it’s a Wednesday it is wake up and I’m Jeff Blackwell along with Johnny Abear and David Dawson it is 19 past the
2144.88 hour this Wednesday morning Dave yes indeed right now we’re joined by Father Thomas Morrow he’s a Catholic author of
2151.68 the book Achieving Chastity in an Unchased World good morning Father Tom
2157.2 good morning good morning happy to have you with us this morning and boy I bet this is a thick book nowadays uh you
2165.68 know we have we have so much surrounding us and everything uh all sports
2170.88 commercials everything that’s out there everything is is is pretty sexualized
2176.0 and we’re talking about living a chasteed life amongst all of this that’s quite the challenge but uh tell us about
2182.72 the book okay well uh basically we the feature
2189.76 the main feature of the book is the fact that we have a method for people to
2195.04 achieve chastity uh in addition to seeking grace uh we have a method that
2201.68 was uh comes from uh Aristotle Thomas Aquinas and Pope John Paul II and um it
2210.4 it uh solves the problem of what happens so often is people they abstain for uh
2216.8 two three four five six weeks and then they and then they binge and um th this
2223.52 little uh technique uh helps you to uh convert the heart the problem is that
2230.24 mind says I don’t want to do this the heart says I got to have it yes and so again from Aristotle Thomas Aquinus John
2236.8 Paul 2 We have a way of uh converting the heart
2242.64 and if you convert the heart and the heart and mind go in the same direction then there’s no struggle my goodness and
2248.8 u that’s chastity so um you want me to tell you the uh things on the list that
2254.56 my goodness you know yeah I’m seeing I’m seeing quite the list you have here it it says strategies to train your mind in
2261.119 overcoming impure thoughts and desires that part right there again if you’re
2266.4 talking a total conversion that has got to be uh quite the release and relief
2272.56 for a lot of folks to suddenly I mean they’re just going to be out of slavery aren’t they yeah a lot of uh people have
2280.56 have used this and have done very well in fact we have a little leaflet that we
2286.079 put out that uh tells the story of two guys that uh found uh Chaffy uh it
2293.04 didn’t take it it took them it took more than overnight but it but they but they
2298.72 worked hard at it and now this one guy who used to fall to pornography and
2303.839 masturbation every day for 20 years now he’s almost completely clean wow so uh
2309.76 it does work and probably a much happier person too i can imagine absolutely and
2315.359 this guy now has got you know he was starting to go into daily mass a little
2321.04 bit but now he’s daily communicant and a very happy guy you’re right you know I’m
2326.88 I’m looking at this next uh uh step you have here it says ways to avoid love addiction and broken relationship i What
2335.2 is love addiction a love addiction is where you you uh are
2341.76 are in love with somebody and it’s like it possesses you you don’t have any freedom uh you’re controlled by it and u
2350.72 we don’t want to be controlled by anything but God so uh people have to uh
2357.04 talk to themselves and in fact this is how I got over a girlfriend in college you talk to yourself and said no I don’t
2363.44 need this um this this is bad this is bad for me and this I’m too uh too
2370.48 hooked on this person and so we tell ourselves that over and over again and finally the the heart gives up and says
2377.119 « Yeah that’s right that was not health healthy. » Wow that was an addiction okay
2382.24 so so the love addiction then is the addiction uh or the desire to be loved or the
2388.88 addiction i don’t think we’d be a uh it would be wrong to have the addiction to
2395.28 desire to love someone or how does that work well the the addiction is when you
2402.72 desire somebody uh as Plato says the the
2408.0 um the good the beautiful and the true in another person right now that’s more noble okay than just sexually sexual
2415.44 gratification but it still can be it still can be selfish uh and that’s the
2420.88 problem that the the the actresses says « Well this is my fifth wedding and this one is really going to stick right? » And
2427.76 uh they’re making a god out of aeros aos is that desire for the good the
2433.52 beautiful and the true so uh it it doesn’t work that way um we we’ve got to
2439.92 love the person for their sake not for our sake that’s the issue and then and
2445.599 then you have six chastity principles to recall to sublimate uh resentment and to
2451.44 find peace talk about that yeah so these are the the points that I I I give cards
2457.76 out in confession to have this list on them sex is holy not a plate thing
2463.04 should never be trivialized created in the image and likeness of God i can live by reason not just by urges persons are
2470.0 to be loved not used as objects of enjoyment uh I must not treat persons as objects
2477.119 even in the mind lest I become a user of persons in practice unchased activity
2482.48 destroys my most precious friendship that with God the source of all happiness and unchased activity brings
2488.8 pleasure but not happiness right right i’m going to skip down to another step here that this this fascinated me
2495.2 because it was uh something else that I had learned uh and and it says how to cultivate a healthy healthy fun
2502.079 activities to stimulate your mind what has happened with our electronic devices
2507.359 is there’s so much there to stimulate the mind that that in its own way some
2512.96 people are addicted to to to games even you know on their phone they can’t put the phone down and that in itself is
2520.0 another addiction and so so you say there’s healthy alternatives to that talk about that okay well uh
2529.359 some people tell me they’re addicted to their football team their favorite football Absolutely and uh one guy one
2536.96 guy told me you should stop watching this was back years when the Redskins were Redskins he said « You should stop
2543.52 watching the Redskins. » Then I said « No because I I’m not hooked on it if I if
2548.8 somebody wants to play tennis I don’t see the Redskins game if I want to go to somebody a religious event I don’t see
2555.599 the Red. » So I don’t I don’t care that much but this guy was addicted to the Pit Pittsburgh Steelers okay and he he
2562.96 he realized that he was addicted so he stopped alto together you don’t have to
2568.24 stop altogether you have to just have everything moderated and realize everything in its own place yes and u do
2575.52 everything in moderation and not be hooked on anything except God and his will that in itself uh speaks volumes
2583.599 and so you you have these these incredible steps this sounds like an incredible book because you’re talking
2588.96 about changing the heart from addiction to all that’s around us that we’re
2594.96 constantly being fed with uh well I I guess fed with it’s all around us for us
2601.2 to consume at such ease uh that this this to to be able to see it all around
2608.4 us yet to turn away from it is quite the feat for a lot of folks and so what you’re saying in this book uh with with
2614.96 these incredible contributions as far as knowledge and goes uh this this this
2621.68 sounds like a very very powerful book absolutely and uh as you were saying by
2627.599 the way uh they have those two stories of the guys that made it out of lust
2632.8 those are in the back of the book those are there uh not just in the leaflet so they’re in the book but people have done
2639.599 it and and they’ve done well but it’s it takes time uh one guy the guy that would
2645.119 used to fall every day for 20 years oh it took him more than a year but he kept
2650.4 improving and the priest in the confession told him he was improving so
2655.599 that that’s how he got courage to pursue this and he came out ahead so so this
2661.92 book that you’ve written here uh is is to help somebody to at least begin the journey uh to improve it’s not something
2669.2 like you’re going to read it and go « Aha I will do this. » It’s not an overnight thing but at least it helps you begin
2674.319 the journey that’s it yeah and you got to do the work that’s what I tell people some people come in and I say « Do you
2681.04 still have the card? » « Yeah. » « Do you know where it is? » « Yeah. » « Are you using it? » « No it doesn’t work if we
2686.4 don’t use it. » It’s just like anything else any type of daily exercise it’s difficult to do at
2693.04 first but I’m sure you improve you get better and better at it it’s just the beginning uh of of of a journey but but
2700.4 father what you’re talking about here and this is the part that really intrigues me because we are an addictive
2708.48 society there’s so much out there that I see that people are slaves to including I mean I’ll fall into that with food oh
2715.359 my gosh you know uh and and I’ll just lose sight of everything else and think about the next meal you know what I mean
2722.0 so to be able to to change my heart yet there’s food all around or or to change
2728.96 you know some of the other things that I’m seeing for people to get over that uh that’s that’s quite the venture uh to
2736.56 to as you’re saying not to avoid something altogether you can’t right
2741.68 that’s it that’s right okay but uh and I do have something in the book I
2747.52 recommend for people to have not sexual fantasies but religious fantasies and
2752.72 what’s the religious fantasy that I have well it’s this this uh God comes to me in the shape of a beautiful woman
2759.92 embraces me warmly and chastely and worships my ear we’re going to be married forever because we are going to
2766.64 be married to God forever that’s what it says in the scriptures wow so that’s an alternative i don’t believe in just
2772.4 taking stuff away i believe in providing something else better wow the book is
2777.839 called Achieving Chastity in an Unchased World this sounds like a very very
2783.599 powerful book and uh it could sounds like it could help out a lot of people we’ve been talking to Father Thomas

3178.88 Orleans channel 15 in Baton Rouge if you’re watching us online I mean if you’re watching us on TV online on
3184.8 Facebook YouTube and everything we got folks joining us like Karen like Janet so want to say good morning to y’all and
3190.48 thanks for joining us right now we are talking to Eric Sammons he’s a Catholic author of the book Moral Money a case
3198.319 for Bitcoin this should be so interesting good morning Eric good morning how are you doing i am just the
3204.96 more I review what you have to talk about the more questions I have
3210.96 there there there is just all of this is still relatively new to a lot of people and especially me because I’m an old
3217.28 coot okay but let’s get all the way back down to digital currency what is Bitcoin
3224.4 yeah that’s a great question that’s really where we have to start because you’re right it is still a new thing and the truth is there’s a lot of uh
3231.76 confusion out there and and there’s a lot of just people don’t understand what it is because of how it’s marketed
3237.28 frankly yeah and one of the things I wanted to do with this book was take it back to more of the basics and I will
3242.8 first say what Bitcoin is not it is not an investment people that’s the first thing they think of they think of it
3248.88 like a stock or something like that but really it’s a new form of money and I
3254.16 think that’s very important i think people don’t always understand what money is you just kind of use it without thinking and so what I’m trying to do in
3260.64 this book is explain first of all just what is money and why there are real serious problems in the in the form of
3267.04 money we use now i.e the dollar and why bitcoin is a superior more moral form of
3273.599 money so really it’s a form of money that is that resides on the internet and the properties it was given when it was
3280.64 first created back about 16 years ago were to mimic somewhat the properties of
3285.839 gold most people realize that gold for a very long time was the form of money used in many societies throughout the
3292.16 world and there’s a reason for that it’s because of its properties tended to make
3297.28 it the best form of money possible in for example the the 1400s or something
3302.559 like that and then we’ve gotten away from that now we have mostly paper money and and things like the dollar but
3309.119 Bitcoin is trying to be it’s funny because it’s a return to the past while also looking to the future so it’s a
3315.599 return to the past of saying okay those properties of gold were really good and made very good money but now what we
3321.599 want to do is it but gold can’t really be used today because most of our commerce is online through the internet
3327.839 and digitally so we’re going to make a type of money that’s similar to gold and
3333.04 a lot of its properties yet it resides on the internet so you can I could literally send money to somebody in
3338.64 Japan it would cost me a couple cents i could send I don’t have this but if I had a million dollars of Bitcoin I could
3344.319 send it to them and they’d get it within about 10 minutes and it’ be worth and it would cost me maybe 50 cents to send it
3350.799 so that’s why that’s essentially what Bitcoin is yeah but but what what you’re
3356.24 saying there is couldn’t that be done for dark deeds i mean if you’re talking about sending a million dollars
3362.0 somewhere I mean in 10 minutes it just seems like there’s more that could be done wrong with that than than good yeah
3369.599 and that’s that’s it’s funny you asked that because it’s one of the reasons I wrote the book is because I I’ve been
3374.72 involved in Bitcoin since 2013 so for a very long time now and that’s one of the most common things I hear from my fellow
3380.48 Catholics in particular is you hear about you know drug deals and things like that and there’s no question that
3387.359 it can be but my argument would be the better a money is the more everybody can
3393.839 use it in a in a more efficient manner so yes people who want to use it for ill
3398.96 can use it for ill but people who want to use it for good can use it even better for good and let me give an
3404.079 example i don’t know if you remember a few years ago when the Canadian government shut down the the truckers
3410.079 who were protesting and they shut down their bank accounts and they took money out of their accounts that’s a case
3416.079 where the the government which is supposed to be working on our side most of the time but in this case they were literally taking it from them and
3422.24 shutting down their bank accounts you could still send them money and they could receive it in Bitcoin in fact they
3427.76 had a Bitcoin address i sent a little money to them in Bitcoin knowing I don’t have to worry about that money being
3432.96 confiscated my goodness by the government so so yes there’s no question when you create something more efficient
3439.44 that means it can be more efficiently used for by everybody and the truth is the dollar is still and cash is still
3446.88 the number one thing that that people use for crime and so okay we’re not going to get rid of cash obviously we
3452.799 shouldn’t want to get rid of cash just because criminals use it but instead we should say let’s work on the criminals
3458.4 separately but let’s have a form of money that’s good for everybody this is this is quite interesting and then and
3464.0 then let’s get back to what you were saying for a lot of folks i mean because you always hear investing in Bitcoin but
3470.079 you’re saying it’s not an investment but the values go up and down i you can watch it online as an So explain that
3477.359 and I and I’m being a little bit uh provocative maybe in saying that and
3482.72 going against kind of the grain but I do believe that I would say Bitcoin is savings it is not it is not an
3488.88 investment and by that what I mean is like traditionally we’ve kind of forget the differences but savings means like
3495.52 you kind of think of savings maybe you put something in the bank in a savings account doesn’t make a lot of money but it’s safe there or even you put it under
3501.76 your mattress or something like that sure but the truth is because of inflation the value of that money let’s
3508.0 say you put it under your mattress it will go down it will go down radically in fact over the past you know it goes
3514.24 down about five or six% a year in recent years the value of it Bitcoin though
3519.52 maintains its value yes I know it goes up and down a lot but if you look at the history of it maintain because of its
3525.04 properties it maintains that value over a long period of time and so it’s really a savings uh avenue because it like I
3532.64 said It’s just simply like you’re saving in this form like it’d be like the person who saves gold and I you know I
3538.799 think that’s fine too like maybe they get some gold coins and they want to save that yes you could call that an
3543.839 investment but I think of that as more of of of savings that you’re just trying not to lose the the value of the money
3551.28 that you that you worked for if you work for money let’s say you put aside $1,000 and all of a sudden in five years it’s
3557.04 worth only $500 yes i feel like somebody’s taken that money from you even though you were doing the right thing by putting it away in savings
3564.079 interesting interesting okay so let’s get to the Catholic side of this let’s get to the moral side of this how is it
3570.88 moral more moral see I would say properties of money a few of the
3575.92 properties of money make them more or less moral one of them is the ability to
3580.96 counterfeit it’s it’s basically impossible to counterfeit Bitcoin that’s true uh and so that that’s one thing
3586.319 secondly it’s scarce and that’s very important and what I mean by that is it can’t be it can’t be created by somebody
3592.96 just on a whim right now our current money the dollar in America that is can be created by the government whenever
3599.28 they feel like it and they do do that and that’s why in fact the value that’s why we have inflation that’s why the
3604.88 value of our money goes down so much why a gallon of milk maybe 30 years ago is so much was so much less than it is
3612.319 today how much it cost it’s because they’re printing money we saw it with the the um 2008 situation with the
3620.559 recession then we saw it with COVID they they create all this new money well when they do that that devalues the value of
3627.04 our money right you can’t do that with Bitcoin and so the reason I call it moral is because I really feel like
3632.88 that’s a moral issue because let’s say somebody you know we talk about in the church just wage that you pay somebody
3638.96 that something that that they should um that that is fair to them that you know they can support their family stuff like
3644.48 that right well what if you pay them a just wage but then the value what you pay them goes down so much they now
3650.24 can’t support themselves and this happens in real life whereas Bitcoin by maintaining that value over time being
3656.16 scarce you can’t just print it out of nothing the government can’t just say « Oh we need to fund a new war so we’re
3661.359 going to print a bunch of money or we need to do whatever. » Well I think that that allows it to have a much more um
3667.68 it’s independent is is a good way to put it and that makes it more moral well I’ve I’ve ordered the book because just
3672.88 in researching you and the book it’s like I have got to know more and so look uh we’re out of time actually Eric we’ve
3679.119 been talking to Eric Sammons the book is called Moral Money: A Case for Bitcoin where do we get a hold of your book
3686.079 easiest way is just go to my website eric Sammons.com just ericammons.com you’ll see a link to to buy the book
3691.92 right there very good Eric once again well thanks for joining us we appreciate this i may have to have you back thank
3699.52 you i’ I’d be happy to thank you very much god bless okay god bless you my
3705.04 goodness all right when we come back we’re going to be talking to Dr jordan Hadad again it is 45 past the hour

3910.4 it is 12 minutes until the top of the hour on this Wednesday wake up with David Dawson i’m Jeff Blackwell and
3916.0 here’s Johnny Abear and a reminder that the novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus
3921.359 starts today yes amen so let’s get that going and uh yes indeed well let’s uh
3926.64 let’s turn our attention now to a really powerful topic dr jordan Hadad he’s the
3931.92 professor of dogmatic theology at Notre Dame Seminary and also the president of the St louis the 9th Arts Society to
3939.119 talk about a topic that’s uh in the news good morning Dr hadad
3944.88 good morning it’s great to be with y’all you bet yeah so we kind of continuing this Catholic 101 segment on the Pope so
3952.64 here’s the general question that came to us here’s the question what is the role of the pope in our church especially
3958.799 with all eyes on the Catholic Church with the election of Pope Leo I 14th and
3965.28 I I would think some non-atholics would say well the role is the pope tells you what to do and you just do it in uh he
3970.96 invents man-made traditions anyway what is what is the role true role of our
3976.88 pope yeah that’s a great question i’m really excited and happy to be able to talk
3982.48 about it with y’all this morning um so to start you know it really all boils
3988.24 down to you know the Pope is the successor of St peter and so all that
3994.079 the Pope is called to do all that the Pope is called to be is is we have to think about it as grounded in St peter
4000.079 himself because the papacy is the continuation in real time of St peter’s
4007.52 calling of St peter’s gifts of St peter’s ministry in the life of the church down through the ages so that in
4015.28 a way St peter continues to guide and direct and minister to the church in and
4020.319 through his successors and here I want to just very briefly introduce three important terms here um
4028.079 that really underline what we’re talking about this morning and the first is Petrine primacy petrine primacy another
4035.52 way to think about that is the primacy of St peter and this refers to the the the person in the office of St peter as
4042.96 the undisputed leader of the apostles and the church in his own day and so
4048.4 Peter by virtue of being the singular leader of the apostles has a clear priority in leadership in authority and
4056.48 service and honor within the church in the college of the apostles and then this doctrine sort of sets the
4063.119 foundations for two other closely related teachings which are called petrine prime petrine succession and
4069.52 papal primacy so petrine succession refers simply to the passing on of the
4075.2 mission and the authority and the prerogatives of Peter to his successors the popes and then papal primacy is sort
4082.88 of like the result of that and papal primacy refers to the priority of leadership of the successor of St peter
4090.24 relative to the successors of the apostles right the college of bishops so the best way to think about this is that
4096.64 what St peter is relative to the rest of the apostles is what the pope is
4102.719 relative to the Catholic bishops of the world and so when we’re thinking about
4107.839 the mission or the calling of of the Roman pontiff of the pope it really just
4112.96 comes down to well what was it that St peter was entrusted with by Christ that
4119.12 informs and and really sets the foundation for what a pope is called to do in any given age so just as St peter
4126.719 was called by Christ to feed his sheep so too is the pope called to feed or to
4132.0 minister to the church just as St peter was given the keys to the kingdom of heaven to bind and to loose so too is
4139.44 the pope given the authority to govern the church in matters of doctrine and morals and disciplines and just as St
4146.64 peter was called the rock and was prayed for by Christ that his faith may not fail so too does Christ preserve the
4153.44 Roman pontiff and authoritatively professing the true faith and so on and so really it just comes down to you know
4160.64 the pope has this unique calling within the church to serve as the the great unifier of the church to serve as the
4168.319 great witness of faith in the church to serve as the the servant of the servants
4173.679 of God the one who serves the bishops so that they might serve their local churches so that we might all you know
4180.56 become the saints that God has has created us to be and be that bride of Christ that Christ died for so that you
4187.839 know we might be presented to him you know spotless and blame blameless when we you know when he comes again
4195.52 i love that title the servant uh to the servants of God and I hearkens back Dr
4202.08 i’d add to when Jesus pulls Peter aside at the end the gospel there when he says
4207.6 strengthen your brothers strengthen your brothers feed my lambs as you said to strengthen to feed to serve that doesn’t
4214.719 sound like a a top- down hierarchy to me sound like an upside down pyramid almost
4220.56 uh rather than way people think of that think of it maybe in as a business or an
4225.76 institutional i don’t know what are your thoughts yeah exactly you know um so
4231.28 there’s this great line from St gregory the Great who was one of the most important popes in the history of the
4236.32 church and and he he lived mostly in the sixth century in the 500s and he says
4242.159 « My honor is the honor of the whole church my honor is the steadfast
4247.6 strength of my brethren then do I receive true honor when it is denied to none of those to whom my to whom honor
4254.8 is due. » You know so he’s saying he’s saying that that his responsibility is
4260.0 not to is not to to sort of govern in a in a as as the nations do right jesus
4266.4 says in Matthew 20 « Whoever would be great among you must be your servant. »
4271.52 And so in the church we’re really called to a a a sort of paradigm shift of how
4276.8 we think about the nature of power and authority it’s not something to lord over but rather it exists for the sake
4283.76 of of service it exists for the sake of love it exists for the sake of of
4289.44 strengthening so that we might more freely and ablely respond you know to
4295.12 the great calling that Christ gives each and every one of us who’s our true master you know which is why we call the
4301.52 Roman pontiff the vicor of Christ you know he’s the ambassador he’s the one who serves on behalf of Christ so that
4308.159 we might all follow him more closely well you know we’re we’re running out of time but because maybe next time we want
4314.159 to touch on this idea of infallibility i mean some people think yeah everything the pope says from his chair is to be
4322.08 believed or on or even in an interview or something but uh let’s just let’s hit that topic in the future maybe what
4328.8 exactly is infallibility when he speaks ex Cathedral and those types of things but uh but that’s for another day so Dr
4336.159 jordan Hadad thank you so much for joining us this morning where can people keep up with St louis the 9inth Art
