Le Moyen Âge est souvent associé à l’idée de ceintures de chasteté. Cependant, la réalité historique est différente.

La période médiévale est fréquemment citée comme le moment d’apparition des ceintures de chasteté. Toutefois, ce lien est largement dû à des légendes nées à la fin du Moyen Âge. La tradition veut que les croisés aient enfermé leurs femmes dans des ceintures de chasteté. Leur objectif était d’assurer la fidélité des épouses durant l’absence de leurs maris. Les écrits et les images ont largement participé à la propagation de cette légende. Néanmoins, les preuves historiques de cette pratique sont rares.

Méthodes appliquées à la chasteté masculine contrôlée :

Les temps anciens en Grèce et à Rome.

La chasteté était souvent, dans le monde grec et romain, synonyme de pureté et de vertu. Les civilisations grecques et romaines n’imposaient pas généralement la chasteté à l’aide de moyens physiques tels que les ceintures de chasteté. Elle trouvait sa base dans des principes spirituels et religieux. Les Vestales, prêtresses de la déesse Vesta, étaient obligées de rester vierges, sous peine de mort. C’est un exemple extrême de chasteté institutionnalisée.

La civilisation égyptienne ancienne a joué un rôle clé dans le développement de l’histoire.

La chasteté était parfois une décision volontaire prise par les prêtres et prêtresses en Égypte. Ils considéraient que l’abstinence élevait leur pouvoir spirituel. Cependant, aucune preuve concrète n’atteste l’usage de dispositifs physiques pour préserver la chasteté. La régulation sexuelle dépendait surtout de la discipline personnelle. Les traditions religieuses avaient aussi un rôle dans la maîtrise de la sexualité.

Dispositifs pour les deux sexes : La lutte contre la masturbation et les premiers dispositifs de chasteté.

La masturbation était considérée comme une menace importante pour la santé mentale et physique à l’époque victorienne. Les médecins et les moralistes de l’époque étaient en faveur de mesures sévères pour contrer ce qu’ils appelaient « l’auto-abus ». Cette situation a entraîné la mise en place et l’usage de dispositifs de chasteté, pour les hommes comme pour les femmes. La chasteté, pratiquée pour des raisons diverses, bénéficie de nos jours d’un soutien grâce à des coachs experts (par exemplece service)

Le Moyen Âge a souvent lié la chasteté aux valeurs morales. Le pouvoir médiéval voyait dans la chasteté un moyen de réguler la société.

La chasteté féminine était un pilier de nombreuses traditions religieuses.

Les femmes au Moyen Âge étaient vues à travers le prisme de la chasteté. L’Église valorisait la virginité avant le mariage et la fidélité après comme des principes cruciaux. Les femmes étaient considérées comme les protectrices de la pureté morale et leur chasteté était cruciale pour la légitimité des héritiers.

Les croisades ont eu un impact significatif sur la chasteté observée par les chevaliers.

Avant leur départ pour les croisades, les chevaliers européens prenaient souvent des vœux de chasteté, pensant que cela affermissait leur pureté morale et spirituelle pour les préparant mieux à la guerre sainte.

Les communautés monastiques imposaient des règles rigoureuses sur la chasteté à leurs membres.

Les ordres monastiques médiévaux, incluant les bénédictins et les cisterciens, exigeaient un respect rigide des vœux de chasteté. La chasteté représentait pour les religieux médiévaux une abstinence des plaisirs terrestres et un chemin vers une élévation spirituelle. Les légendes de la période médiévale révèlent à quel point la chasteté était significative dans les sphères religieuses, morales, et sociales. Que ce soit à travers des ceintures de chasteté mythiques, des vœux solennels avant les croisades, ou des luttes personnelles contre la tentation, la chasteté représentait un concept central entouré de mysticisme et de dévotion. Les anecdotes médiévales montrent que la chasteté était un outil de contrôle, de pouvoir, et de quête spirituelle dans un monde souvent en conflit entre le physique et le spirituel.

Retranscription des paroles de la vidéo: [Music] my name is Sister Joseph Marie and I’m originally from Denver I’ve been a little sister of the poor for this year 50 years and if I had to do it again I do it the same way the vow of um Hospitality which is um caring for our residents the most neediest and welcoming them as Christ and serving them as a family we anticipate their needs so it’s just such a beautiful family Spirit The Vow of Chastity first of all the vows are the Evangelical counil ILS Chastity for the sake of the Kingdom of Heaven is a precious gift of Grace and of the mercy of God which frees our heart so it may burn for love of God and neighbor by our profession of Chastity we consecrate ourselves with an undivided heart to God alone and loving Fidelity to his call The Vow of Chastity made with within the church signifies our personal and free and loving response to this gift religious life is a life of love it’s a school of love the more we pray to Christ the more we love him the more we love him the more we see his love reflected in those around us and the most vulnerable for us as Little Sisters of the Poor those are our residents others think that we can no longer love our neighbor we can no longer love anyone that we only love God but we love everyone through God and we Are Spiritual mothers we’re not only a physical mother we offer that we give that up to God but we’re spiritual mothers and we are mothers to to the whole world the way I express the vowels is to live simply that’s the vow of poverty to love freely which is Chastity and to listen attentively which for me is obedience and so while they all have meaning in my life I think the vow of Chastity is um pretty key to the way I live and the way I interact to live to love freely I would say that Chastity means that you give your whole heart to Jesus so often times people come up and say like who are you married to and the crazy thing is as a sister when you have the vow of Chastity you are married to Jesus so your whole heart belongs to him and you love people through that love that’s rooted first in him in a certain sense we would say obedience because that is the vow that covers all else um we hear and hear and hear again we we hear the Lord’s voice that’s obedience through rightful and lawful Authority and and so that’s why for the Friars for example they would just take the vow of obedience if I’m listening to God I’m covering the rest but I actually would like to choose Chastity uh for the simple sake that our culture and sometimes by our own poor teaching really misunderstands that vow and we look at it as a renunciation and certainly all all gift of self requires renunciation in some way so that’s real but the vow of Chastity is actually meant to set the heart free in a very unique way a very special way made capable by grace of of loving all in Christ now do I do that no am I in progress yes but is he working that great work in me yes and the reason I love the vow of Chastity is because in the face of the misnomer of its just renunciation actually when people see it lived even if they can’t name it instead of experiencing somebody who is withdrawn holding back um careful cautious they would experience someone who is warm there’ be a type of appropriate affection a space for all and E Stein talks about a woman’s soul in a unique way as having space for the other to unfold and while that is certainly an examination of conscience for me because there’s ways in which my soul is not yet conformed in that way I look back over these last almost two decades now of being his as his bride and I can say yes Lord you you are working that work in me and I’m grateful to have my love expanded beyond what I thought I was capable of the consecrated life proclaims what the father through the son and in the Holy Spirit brings about by his love his goodness and his Beauty the vow of Chastity is a manifestation of dedication to God with an undivided heart it is a reflection of the infinite love which links the three Divine persons in the mysterious depths of the life of the Trinity the love to which the Incarnate Word Bears witness even to the point of giving his life the love poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit which evokes a response of total love for God and the [Music] brethren .
